Merry Welsch, WACO Family and Consumer Science Teacher
Merry Welsch is the 7-12 Family and Consumer Science teacher for the WACO Community School District. She is a graduate of Iowa State University and has been teaching in the field for twenty-four years. Mrs. Welsch has had the pleasure of teaching FACS at WACO for 16 years. For her, it is a privilege to be a part of the educational lives of many family members of this district.



The Family and Consumer Science Curriculum offers students the opportunity to explore a wide variety of topics. Within the framework of traditional school experiences, students will learn skills that they will use for life.




Standard 1: Integrate multiple life roles and responsibilities in family and
work settings.
Standard 2: Evaluate management practices related to human resources.
Standard 3: Integrate knowledge, skills, and practices for careers in housing,
interiors and furnishings.
Standard 4: Integrate knowledge, skills, and practices in food preparation.
Standard 5: Evaluate parenting roles and responsibilites on strengthening
individuals and families.
Standard 6: Integrate knowledge, skills, and practices in textiles and apparel.


Family and Consumer Science classes offered at WACO for the 2007-2008 School Year include:
1. 7th Grade FACS: A required one quarter class for all 7th grade students.
2. 8th Grade FACS: An elective one quarter class for 8th grade students.
3. Comprehensive Family and Consumer Science: An elective year long class
for high school students.
4. Foods I: An elective semester class for high school students.
5. Foods II: An elective semester class for high school students.
6. Young Adult Living: An elective semester class for high school seniors.
7. Child Development: An elective semester class for high school students.
8. Interior Design: An elective semester class for high school students.
9. Creative Fabrics: An elective semester class for high school students.
