COURSE DESCRIPTION
Eighth grade English focuses on more challenging reading and writing assignments. Students will participate in units based on short stories, novels, drama, speech, and independent writing. The majority of these units will work on reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, and critical thinking skills.

GRADING SCALE:
90%-100% = A
80%-89% = B
70%-79% = C
60%-69% = D
59%-down = F

HOMEWORK:
Students vote on two nights a week to have homework. On these nights, the assignment will be given within the last five minutes of class and will be expected to be completed when they come in the room the following day. On the other three days of the week, class time may be given to work on an assignment. If they do not get their assignment finished during class time, they will be expected to complete it before they come to class the following day.

LATE WORK:
Late work is accepted, but students will be docked 10% of the total points possible which will be subtracted from what they earn on the assignment.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Eighth grade independent strategies is a nine-week course that is designed to assist students in identifying strategies to help them become better learners. Each student contracts for a grade and is allowed to evaluate his/her own progress in meeting that grade during the nine weeks. In addition to reading books of their choice, students complete two book talks with the teacher, present one of their books to the class, write a letter to a friend or the teacher for each book they read, and work with self-selected vocabulary. Students are exposed to a variety of reading and review strategies to help them remember what they read.
