Hello! My name is Maranda Connop, and I am the new science teacher at WACO HS. I graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in December of 2004 and came back to live in my native Winfield. I am excited to be teaching in this district! I will be teaching the following classes: |
 |
Physical Science Physical science class provides an introduction to the physical sciences of chemistry and physics. In physical science we will study the structure and properties of matter as well as the relationships between matter and energy. Students will conduct lab experiments periodically. We will also discuss examples of how physical science affects everyday life and new developments and controversies in science by analyzing current news articles. |
 |
Biology General biology is an introduction to all the life sciences. The course begins with the characteristics of life and a study of cells. Topics progress through the kingdoms of living things from simple to complex and the interactions between them. Both semesters will include periodic laboratory experiences and problem-solving using the scientific method. Students will investigate and form opinions on current topics in science by reading and analyzing news articles. |

Chemistry Chemistry covers the structure and properties of matter. Topics begin with the structure of atoms and progress through atom interactions to form compounds and changes that take place during chemical reactions. Organic, nuclear, and biochemistry are covered at the end of the year. Laboratory experiments are conducted periodically throughout the year. This class is taught as”college prep” class and should be taken during the student’s junior year. Students are tested for their understanding of the vocabulary and skills needed to be successful in their first college chemistry class.

Environmental Science Environmental Science is offered second semester. In this class students will study different aspects of Earth such as water, air, land, and climate. We will learn how people affect the environment by studying energy, waste, and population growth. Also, we will investigate the importance of biodiversity. Students will also examine current events in environmental science by analyzing news articles. |
