After graduation from Waterloo West High School in 1964, I attended Central Missouri State College. I graduated from University of Northern Iowa in 1969 with a bachelor's degree. At UNI I specialized in studying the teaching of writing. I have done graduate work at University of Iowa and University of Northern Iowa, and earned my master's degree in curriculum and instruction from the College of St. Scholastica.
My professional life started in Cedar Falls, where I was advertising director for Porter's Camera Store, Inc. In that position I created and edited the corporation's first four catalogs. I was self-taught in photography and page layout, and this experience let me put my knowledge to work in product photography, catalog design, and printing.
Having taught language arts at WACO for thirty-eight years, I continue to enjoy moving ahead with the times, learning new technologies and methods, and producing writing, photography, and publications along with my students. Room 109 at WACO Secondary School is a publishing lab as well as a classroom.
Computers and networking, film and digital photography are major parts of our work. We have facilities to develop and print student creations for real, useful projects, enjoyment, and career education. Our Intel iMac computer lab employs Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite 2 to make this possible. Our chemical darkroom is used for traditional photo processing.
We produce an all-PDF, direct-to-plate yearbook. This gives us complete control of pre-press production. According to our yearbook publisher representative, we were her pilot school in this technology in Iowa, and one of the few equipped and certified to do this.
WACO Parentletter, normally published each Friday of the school year, is our weekly newsletter for the WACO community. If you have a news article and/or digital photo that is pertinent to WACO, please email me at the link above. Please include your name and contact information. Please do not format your article with special fonts, boldfacing, centering, etc. Plain text in the body of the email is preferred. Photos should be attached, not embedded in your document. The deadline for Parentletter items is 4:00 P.M. each "school Wednesday," or two days before publication on shortened school weeks.
All of my courses are portfolio based. This means that what the student creates is the basis for evaluation, and continuous improvement is the goal. Whether it is textual or visual, a high degree of craftsmanship is expected in students' work, and it is achieved through production, critique, and revision.
