Attendance: In order for you to succeed in this class, you need to attend class. Participation is part of your grade in this class.

You need to be in the room and in your seat when the bell rings.

When you are tardy, please place your planner with signed Passport page open on my desk and take your seat without disrupting the class. I will enter your tardy as excused or unexcused according to your passport.

Three tardies in one week = detention

Class Materials: Bring all of your materials for class to class! If you must go to your locker to retrieve forgotten materials, you will owe me 15 minutes after school that day or 15 minutes before or after school the next day.

Materials needed each day:
· Black or dark blue pen for all graded assignmnets and tests.
. Red pen for checking daily assignments and tests.
· Loose leaf college-ruled paper in a three ring binder for all graded assignments.
· A spiral notebook to be used exclusively for English.
· Handouts being used in the current unit of study.
· Assigned text (text book, novel, etc.)being used in the current unit of study.

Participation Points: Every school day you have the opportunity to earn up to 10 points. There are 450 points to be earned each quarter for participation. The point breakdown is as follow

Coming to class = 2 pts
Being prepared and bringing materials = 4 pts
Staying on task = 4 pts

Participation will account for 10% of your quarter grade.

Graded work: All assignments turned in for points must be either typed or written in ink (blue or black) on loose-leaf college-ruled paper. All assignments must have proper heading (shown below) and be legible. Finished work must also be free of spelling errors and basic grammar and mechanical errors (we will cover basic G.U.M in class). All questions are expected to be answered in complete sentences. At times this year I will ask for students to submit papers/assignments to me electronically.

Proper heading:

Name (first and last)
Class title (i.e. English II)
Date
Title of assignment

Journal/reflection writing is also a graded part of this class and will be done in your spiral notebook. For these assignments the above rules do not apply except for legibility.

Late Work: All work must be turned in on time! I do not accept late work! (I am willing to make exceptions if you come to me a week or several days before the due date and, with significant reason, ask for an extension. Do not ask for an extension the night before a big project is due. I will not extend the due date.)

Drink: Water, only in a clear bottle, is allowed in any part of the building. I encourage students to bring water to my class as my room gets warm and I will not sign students out to the water fountain. The privilege to have any drink in the room can be revoked at anytime based on an individual’s behavior or a class’s behavior.

Restroom: Restroom breaks should be taken in-between classes. If you find it necessary to use the bathroom during class please do it either during the first five minutes or last five minutes of class.

Appropriate Language: Please speak with respect. Foul language is offensive and disrespectful to others. It will not be tolerated!

Appropriated respect for school property is expected. Students are not to sit on desks, write on desk tops, lean on chairs, hit computers, etc. Any violation of abuse to school property will result in a referal to the office with detention.

Grading:

90 – 100% A 60 – 69% D

80 – 89% B 59% - and lower F

70 – 79% C

GRADES ARE EARNED BY THE INDIVIDUAL STUDENT AND NOT GIVEN BY THE TEACHER. YOU WILL RECEIVE WHAT YOU HAVE EARNED. PLEASE THINK AHEAD SO YOUR WORK REFLECTS THE GRADE YOU DESIRE TO RECEIVE.

Each class’s grades will be weighted differently and explained to individual classes.

I will not give out extra credit at the end of the quarter for you to raise your grade. You need to be concerned about your grade the entire quarter, not just the 9th week!!!
