WACO Elementary : PreK - K
Standard #1 Effectively gathers and organizes information in the library media center
Benchmarks: Knows that materials in the library media center are arranged in order. Is developing an understanding of library procedures such as finding a book. Knows how to take proper care of a book.
Standard #2 Evaluates and uses information found in the library media center
Benchmarks: Is developing the ability to attend to the sights and sounds of story telling. Is developing the ability to respond to what is seen and heard. Has some favorite books or main characters.
WACO Elementary : First grade
Standard #1 Effectively gathers and organizes information in the library media center
Benchmarks: Knows that materials in the library media center are arranged in a specific order. Learning the difference between fiction and non-fiction materials. Knows the library media center has materials other than books. Can select a book of interest to her/him.
Standard #2 Evaluates and uses information found in the library media center
Benchmarks: Attends to the sights and sounds of story telling. Can participate in a discussion following a story. Understands that responses should be relevant to the discussion. Can relate a story to her/his own experience. Knows a story has a main theme or meaning. Can identify parts of a book (cover, spine, spine label). Understands concepts of author, title, subject and illustrator. Can follow checkout procedures to obtain a book.
WACO Elementary : Second Grade Standard #1 Effectively gathers and organizes information in the library media center
Benchmarks: Knows the main groupings of books in the library (easy, fiction, non-fiction, etc.). Can describe the difference between fiction and non-fiction. Learning basic alphabetizing skills. Can locate general books at an appropriate reading level. Understands there is a catalog of materials in the library. Can locate a specific book with assistance of librarian or library aid. Can locate the general encyclopedia, almanac and dictionaries. Can look up a word or topic in the encyclopedia and dictionary. Knows the location of non-book sources such as periodicals and computers.

Benchmarks: Attends to the sights and sounds of story telling. Can identify the main theme or meaning from a story. Can recall details, paraphrase and summarize a story . Can identify parts of a book (cover, spine, spine label, title page). Can identify the author, title, subject and illustrator. Can identify publisher, place of publication and date of publication. Follows checkout procedures.
WACO Elementary : Third Grade
Standard #1 Effectively gathers and organizes information in the library media center
Benchmarks: Knows the main groupings of books in the library. Understands the definition of biography and autobiography. Can correctly identify examples of fiction and non-fiction. Can use alphabetizing skills to locate information in the library. Can locate general books at an appropriate reading level. Understands non-fiction books are arranged with the Dewey Decimal System. Can use library catalog to identify a desired book. Can locate a specific book with minimal assistance. Can use the encyclopedia, almanac and dictionary to find information. Knows there are specialized encyclopedias and dictionaries. Can identify non-book sources such as periodicals, av and computers.

Benchmarks: Can use table of contents, glossary and index to find information. Is familiar with various authors, series and characters . Understands importance of currency and date of publication. Follows checkout procedures.
WACO Elementary : Fourth Grade
Standard #1 Effectively gathers and organizes information in the library media center
Benchmarks: Can use a library catalog to locate books by call numbers and letters. Understands that biographies are organized by the subject’s last name. Understands importance of citing sources of information. Can alphabetize by interior letters and names. Understands the concept of key words. Can locate books at an appropriate reading level. Understands that the Dewey Decimal System is arranged by subject. Uses non-book sources of information such as periodicals, av and computers. Knows that the Internet is a source of information.

Benchmarks: Can identify the dedication, preface, appendix, and bibliography. Can use table of contents, glossary and index to find information. Can use charts, maps, illustrations, diagrams and graphs Can use specialized encyclopedias and dictionaries to find information Can identify and describe favorite authors and genres. Beginning to evaluate text and information for quality. Understands importance of currency and date of publication. Is familiar with the concepts of character, plot and setting. Follows checkout procedures.
WACO Elementary : Fifth and Sixth Grade
Standard #1 Effectively gathers and organizes information in the library media center
Benchmarks: Uses library catalog to locate books by call numbers and letters. Can interpret information in the library catalog (reading level, currency, etc.). Understands and uses cross-references. Is able to cite sources of information. Can alphabetize by interior letters and names. Can identify appropriate key words. Understands that topics can be too broad or too specific for purpose. Can convert own terminology to that used in catalog subject headings. Locates books at an appropriate reading level. Understands the Dewey Decimal System. Can determine the reference source most appropriate for a specific question. Can use an almanac to find a statistic. Can use an atlas to find a specific map or place. Uses non-book sources of information such as periodicals, av and computers. Uses the Internet as a source of information. Is familiar with aea online databases. Can access a periodical index.

Benchmarks: Developing characteristics of a life long learner. Uses library to find both academic and leisure reading materials. Has read a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction works. Can identify significant literary works. Shows evidence of analyzing and synthesizing information. Can carry research through to a concluded product. Can present an oral or written presentation. Can use charts, maps, illustrations, diagrams and graphs. Contrasts and compares authors and their works. Evaluates information for quality. Interprets information for specific uses. Understands importance of currency and date of publication. Can describe characters, plot and setting. Follows checkout procedures.
