STANDARDS AND BENCHMARKS : MEDIA 7-12
Standard #1 Effectively gathers and uses information for research purposes.
Element of Success: 3. Demonstrate basic academic skills. 4. Think critically and solve problems. 6. Commit to learning as a life-long process.
Benchmarks: Uses encyclopedias to gather information for research topics. Uses dictionaries to gather information for research topics. Uses key words, indexes, cross references and letters on volumes to find information for research topics. Uses multiple representations of information (e.g. maps, charts, etc.) to find information for research topics. Distinguishes primary source from other sources of information. Uses the card or online catalog to locate books for research reports. Uses the Readers Guide to Periodical Literature and other indexes to gather information for research topics including career exploration. Uses maps, globe, atlases, and other multimedia sources to learn about the physical world, different peoples and how they interact .
Standard #2 Demonstrates competence in general skills and strategies for reading information.
Element of Success: 1. Communicate effectively. 2. Demonstrate basic academic skills. 6. Commit to learning as a life-long process.
Benchmarks: Comprehends the main idea of simply expository information. Communicates the main idea of expository information through effective writing and speaking skills. Uses different parts of books ( including index, table of contents, glossary, and appendix ).
Standard #3 Demonstrates competence in identifying specific types of literature.
Element of Success: 3. Demonstrate basic academic skills. 6. Commit to learning as a life-long process. 8. Strive to lead a balanced life.
Benchmarks: Identifies fairy tales, fables and tall tales. Distinguishes fiction vs. non-fiction Lists different types of fiction Describes features of biographies and autobiographies. Describes features of poetry and drama.
Standard #4 Demonstrates competence in using different information sources to accomplish specific learning tasks.
Element of Success: 3. Demonstrate basic academic skills. 4. Think critically and solve problems. 5. Use and apply technology skills. 6. Commit to learning as a life-long process.
Benchmarks: Uses rules of alphabetization. Uses title page, table of contents, foot notes, glossary, and indexes. Uses guide and key words. Uses general reference materials including textbooks, periodicals, almanacs. Employs efficient information search strategies.
Standard #5 Demonstrates familiarity with selected literary works of enduring quality.
Element of Success: 1. Communicate effectively. 6. Commit to learning as a life-long process. 8. Strive to lead a balanced life. 9. Embrace diversity.
Benchmarks: Demonstrates a basic familiarity with selected fiction. Demonstrates a basic familiarity with selected non-fiction. Demonstrates an understanding of why certain literary works may be considered classics or works of enduring quality and substance. Demonstrates a basic familiarity with both male and female authors and characters in classic literature. Demonstrates a basic familiarity with literature from different cultures.
Standard #6 Demonstrates ability to use technology to find information and solve problems.
Element of success: 4. Think critically and solve problems. 5. Use and apply technology skills.
Benchmarks: Uses computer for basic word processing. Locates library information in a variety of formats. Uses CD Rom information sources. Uses inter net to find information.
Standard #7 Demonstrates appreciation of intellectual freedom and tolerance toward others’ ideas and opinions.
Element of Success: 2. Develop an exhibit social responsibility. 4. Think critically and solve problems. 7. Develop and use social skills. 8. Strive to lead a balanced life. 9. Embrace diversity.
Benchmarks Discusses a variety of topics in a group. Identifies different points of view. Describes concepts of freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Describes concept and history of intellectual freedom. Describes concepts of censorship and freedom to read. Articulates a personal philosophy regarding freedom of speech which synthesizes multiple viewpoints.
