An Overview of Curriculum
Calendar: This is a time where students review telling time, money, dates, and other skills.

Accelerated Reading (AR): This is a time when students choose books at their reading level, read the book, and take a comprehension test on the computer.

Handwriting: Handwriting is integrated throughout the day. Students practice proper form of the letters in spelling and writing assignments.

Working with Words/Spelling: Students have a spelling list each week. The list is given Monday and the final is on Friday. The list is written in the student’s assignment book. We do activities with the spelling words throughout the week focusing on a particular spelling pattern.

Writing: At writing time we work on grammar and writing skills. The Six-Trait Writing Program is a main focus in instructing writing. The traits are: ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, and presentation. Students may do choice writing, work on publishing a story, or work on an assigned activity.

Lanuage Arts: The Scotts Foresman reading series covers phonics and word study, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension. It also includes writing, grammar, and spelling. Students work in small and large groups to cover skills. The Text Talk program is also being used to increase the vocabulary.

Math: We use the math text along with manipulatives to learn the majority of our math concepts. Math concepts focused on in second grade are basic addition and subtraction facts, place value to the tens place, adding two-digit numbers with renaming, identifying coins and values of coins, time telling to the five-minute intervals, and solving one-step story problems.

Science and Social Studies: These classes alternate during the week. A unit theme is featured, and different activities are done with the units to learn concepts. Science themes include: Pebbles, Sand, and Silt, Balance and Motion and Plants. Social Studies themes include: Our Community, All About Earth, Our Past, All About Work, and Our Government.
