Language Arts |
Writing Students will be working on a variety of writing projects this year. The 6 Traits of Writing will drive our classroom conversations about student writing. The traits provide consistent language to describe what writers really do as they draft, revise, and edit. The traits are:
*Ideas: the meaning and development of the message *Organization: the internal structure of the piece *Voice: the way the writer brings the topic to life *Word Choice: the specific vocabulary the writer use to convey meaning *Sentence Fluency: the way the words and phrases flow throughout the text *Conventions: the mechanical correctness of the piece
Grammar Moms, Dads, Grandparents, Mailcarriers - WATCH OUT! We are always on the look out for "Grammar Goofs"--mistakes in grammar usage, spelling, or puctuation. Students bring in the examples so we can discuss the mistakes to further our learning.
We will be studying parts of speech, punctuation, subject/verb agreement and much more.
Spelling Instruction will foucs on a variety of spelling patterns throughout the year. Through examination of these patterns, it is my hope that students will be able to learn how to apply these patterns when writing other words as well.

Math |
| In fourth and fifth grade math, students build and deepen their knowledge and ability to work with numbers. Place value, basic operations, working with decimals, fractions, measurement, probablity, and graphing are some of the areas of study. |
Social Studies |
Our social studies curriculm focuses on the United States. Students gain background knowledge of our country by studying the regions of the United States and what makes them unique. Our focus then shifts to the history of our nation from the first Americans to the Civil War.
