Welcome to our first grade classroom. We are glad to have you visit our site. We will start by explaining why there are two teachers in our classroom. Both Mrs. Shelman and Mrs. Barnhart are Reading Recovery instructors, as well as first grade teachers. While one is teaching in the classroom the other is teaching a student in the Reading Recovery room. At noon we switch positions. Mrs. Shelman has taught in the WACO school district since 1991. Mrs. Barnhart has been with WACO since 1994. We are energetic teachers who believe in hands on/minds on learning.
Reading consists of Shared Reading (whole class), Guided Reading (small, leveled groups), and Independent Reading (one-on-one). Each is implemented into our classroom several times a week.
First graders are using the Scott Foresman consumable math book. There are 28 chapters about all aspects of math many of which teach students the strategies they need for addition and subtraction.
Students will use three Foss Science Kits which include Air and Weather, Solids and Liquids, and Insect. Between science units students will work on Social Studies units using our new books.
Our writing program consists of a Writer's Workshop philosophy. During this time we work with our students on 6+1 Traits of Writing.
First grade is a huge year for a child. It is a year of growing and learning many new things. We believe in keeping parents informed of classroom events and procedures.
