Welcome to WACO First Grade
Mrs. Hudson's Classroom
Welcome to my first grade classroom. I have been at WACO since 1980. I taught for a year in southeast Iowa before coming to WACO.

I have 15, highly eager to learn, students in my room this year. I really enjoy working with students of this age.

There is a great deal of highly specifide curriculm at this grade level. Reading consists of Shared Reading (whole class), Guided Reading (small, leveled groups), and Independent Reading (one-on-one). Each of these is implemented into my classroom several times a week. First graders are using the Scott Foresman consumable math book. There are 28 chapters about all aspects of math many of which teach students the strategies they need for addition and subtraction. Students will use three Foss Science Kits which include Air and Weather, Solids and Liquids, and Insects. Between science units students will work on Social Studies units using our new books. I will continue to work with my students on 6+1 Traits of Writing. This is a program that the whole elementary implemented in 2004-2005. The whole elementary will be working to increase student's vocabulary knowledge which will help reading comprehension.

First grade is a huge year for a child. It is a year of growing and learning many new things. I believe in keeping parents informed of classroom events and procedures. Monthly newletters and weekly updates are sent home with each student. Please visit me if you have questions concerning my classroom.
